Little Hallingbury Cricket Club Saturday Team v Three Caps on Sat 03 Aug 2013 at 1.30pm
Little Hallingbury Cricket Club Lost 124 runs
Match report
Top of the table 3 Caps amassed 325 runs for the loss of 8 wickets at Gaston Green. Sunil Vish top scored with 90 not out after Kumar has raced to 78 in double quick time at the top of the order. Malik was the pick of the Hallingbury bowling for his economical 1-22 from his 10 overs. 14 year old Zac Matthews took his first league wicket for the club, whilst Jay Fensom, Alex Turner and Oli Turner all picked up 2 wickets each.
In reply the Berries lost Phipps to a run out and both Turner brothers early to leave them 23-3. Williams and the in-form Ishfaq Malik then put on 125 for the 4th wicket before the captain was run out for 47. Malik fell for lbw for 86, to take his tally to 300 runs from his last 4 innings. Phil Rowley's 28 and 5 penalty runs off of a helmet saw Hallingbury to 201 and secure 9 precious bonus points in their relegation battle.
Further observations that day ----------
A defeat yes, but far less damaging than the military set backs of Singapore 1942,Suez 1957 or Aden 1967 endured by the British Army.
LHCC planned strategy was to extract total achievable value from the campaign waged 1330-1945 hrs on 03.08.2013 using resources, men and material as available and reporting for duty that day.
Following successful negotiations with the enemy at close quarters the toss was won and General Williams elected to take the field. The enemy were engaged. A fierce firefight immediately ensued and 3 Caps raced to 100 after just 9 salvos of 6 each from the Hallingbury company. MANY MUNITIONS FELL SHORT AND WIDE OF TARGETS,the resourceful 3 Caps met force with force causing widespread damage - Privates Turner (A) ,Morter and Fensom took serious casualties in the opening exchanges.
With the key objective at risk, Gen.Williams switched tactics to a combination of multi-directional aerial mortar from Lance Corporal Turner (O)and surgical strikes from the reliable weaponry of Sergeant Malik. This wrested some control as the enemy were becalmed, confused and contained in their attacks:the next 14 salvos ceding just 53 runs. Morale was boosted further among the platoon with a mention in dispatches for Pte Rowley (E) taking a sharp level catch positioned at wide midwicket, and 2 further enemy casualties falling to L.cpl Turner(O).The Hallingbury campaign was getting back on track.
Then 2 thirds into the battle a concerted counter offensive was launched by 3 Caps. However this time collateral damage was exacted by the Hallingbury platoon as Cadet Matthews,Pts Fensom,Rumble, Tuner (A) were thrown into the defence with support cover from Turner (O),Rumble,Williams able to catch the enemy out. As ever in any war, opportunities were missed at wide cover point;extra cover;sniper behind, as the enemy finally retired at 325 for 8 casualties. A heavy toll, but maximum bowling points for the home side.
The field hospital was unutilised, and the sides raided the NAAFI for provisions and tea.
For the second half of the Hallingbury campaign begun at 1658 sharp.Outright victory was a bridge too far, and the real campaign objective was 200 total runs without loss of the entire company. Some early ill discipline, friendly fire, lousy communications/use of radio accounted for foolish sacrifices, and left The locally known Berries staring a humiliation at 23 for 3 casualties : both Turners and lieutenant Phipps. Injudicious waste of men in battle is always sapping for company morale. However leadership from Gen. Williams 47 and the trained professionalism of Sgt Malik 86, clawed respectability back for the regiment, and campaign objective. As the score climbed to the 140s. Pte Rowley(E) looked good until perishing early to the planted i.e.d (the feared googly). A rearguard performance, worthy of Walmington-on-sea's finest, mounted by Captain Rowley (P),supported by Ptes Rumble and Fenson, saw Hallingbury to the achievable objective albeit courtesy of a discarded helmet on the battlefield.
Next week the regiment regroups for the bluffs of High Beach to face the fearsome ANZAC contingent of snipers and local yeomanry.
(this report was made by the roaming War correspondent as Stuart Hall is now detained at Her Majesty's Pleasure).
