Little Hallingbury Cricket Club Won by losing fewer wickets

Match report Teenagers Kick Life into Berries Relegation Battle

A thrilling match ended with High Beech finishing with the same number of runs that Little Hallingbury had posted. Berries' openers Stewart Goold and Alex Turner put on 43 for the first wicket, before a mini collapse saw 3 wickets fall in 5 balls. Alex Turner batted well before falling shortly after reaching his 50. When Malik (30) and Williams (5) departed Hallingbury were left on 119 for 6. Tom Phipps looked confident and played superbly, but when he fell to Islam for an excellent 43 it left 15 year olds Jay Fensom and Luke Rumble at the wicket. Both teenagers' performances belied their age as they put on an unbeaten stand of 52 for the 8th wicket. Fensom produced some sumptuous drives, caressing one delivery from the off-spinner Islam exquisitely through extra cover for four. Rumble peppered the square leg boundary as he dealt dismissively with Brooks over-pitched second spell as the pair saw the total to 215.

A poor call by Farma saw Paul Smith run out early in Beach's reply. Farma was superbly caught by Alex Turner off of Sunny Bharambe for 18, but Brooks (53) and Fowler(68) looked to have given the home side a match winning advantage. Sunny Bharambe removed Brooks as he played on and the third of Berries' teenage trio, James Budd, removed Beach's captain, Evans, for 5. A direct hit from the same player ran out Fowler and a second direct from Budd ran out Islam to give Hallingbury a glimmer of hope. However, it looked like High Beach's game as they required just 15 from the last 5 overs. Fensom (1-30) took the wicket of Gilbert (26) just as he threatened to see his team home and Bharambe (3-45) trapped Coe LBW. With 2 required from the final over, Malik (1-29) had Kent caught behind by Phipps. A single off of the final ball saw the scores finish level on 215 and Hallingbury win by virtue of losing 2 fewer wickets.

It was a game played in an excellent sprit and the highest praise must go to High Beach's skipper, Evans. He selflessly recalled Fensom to the wicket after the teenager was caught off a shoulder high delivery, which had not been called for a no ball. It was possibly the finest example of sportsmanship to set to the two young players in the middle.
