Little Hallingbury Cricket Club Saturday Team v High Beach on Sat 23 Jul 2016 at 1.30pm
Little Hallingbury Cricket Club Won By 128 runs
Match report
Another hot sunny day at Gaston Green and another winning of the toss by Sudip mase it an easy choice to bat on a dry, flat wicket. With Stewart away, Alex was joined by Gareth at the wicket and the opening pair took full advantage of some looseners, with 25 coming from the first 2 overs. The opening partnership lasted 13 overs until Gareth was caught at deepish mid-on by a very good diving catch for 37, with the score on 84. Ish made 18 before falling LBW to a sharply turning ball from Kent, which may have in fact done a little too much. Alex fell soon afterwards to nominative determinism to a turner which kept low as he was bowled by Kent (5-50) for a fine score of 63. Jay and Stuart made 21 and 22 respectively before Luke provided some much need solidity to the lower middle order striking 8 fours and 2 sixes in his 51. Luke perished in the 43rd over having hit 2 fours and attempting a Rumble Scoop (similar to a Dilshan Scoop but played when the ball is going on to hit middle stump) having steered Berries to 259 all out.
High Beach knew they needed to bat positively in order to match the run rate of just over 6 an over. Seghal perished early on when he played an injudicious drive to the first ball he received from Rich which swung back between bat and pad and instigate the infamous deth rattle. Singh made 29 in an innings that always gave hope to the bowlers. Rich's and Sudip's courage to leave the leg side open was rewarded when Singh closed the face of his bat on the ball and skied an edge that Rich snaffled with ease. Jay's 5 overs went unrewarded in terms over this week, but with 3 maidens and only 6 runs in that spell he built pressure on the batting side which induced errors at the other end. Younas fell for 8 as he failed to connect with a low full toss from Rich and Luke Rumble belatedly decided to take the catch just backward of square. Kent's resistance was ended when he drove Rich (3-61) upishly to mid-off where Dylan showed his agility by parrying the ball, falling backwards and then catch the ball at the second attempt. Thus proving that with his fielding ability and calmness he can even take catch lying down. From that point on Berries were in control of the game and an extremely misrely spell of bowling fron Sudip (2-4) and especially Ish who took 4 for 7 off of his 8 overs left the Beech teetering on 127 for 9. Luke Stedman in his fist over in league cricket applied the coup de grace with a fine delivery that straightened and hit the top of middle and off to pick up his first Saturday wicket and secure another 26 points for Little Hallingbury.
Post script
The performances of Luke Stedman, Dylan Canty and Sam Watt today demonstrate the value of all the work that Keith, Nick and Martin have done on both Wednesday evenings and Sunday afternoons with the colts. The Saturday squad is all the stronger for their efforts and the development of our young players.
