Abridge v Little Hallingbury Cricket Club Saturday Team on Sat 29 Jul 2017 at 1.30pm
Little Hallingbury Cricket Club Lost scores tied 257,LHCC lost 1 more wicket
Match report
British summer: Saturday Abridge Essex, 29 July 1.30 pm. at Hoe Lane in sight of the historic Malsters Arms. However history will not record a blistering hot summer afternoon, but an epic cricket match in HECL League 3, where 2 sides slugged it out toe to toe under leaden skies and in pouring rain.
The feeling of bemusement dominated proceedings when 22 players witnessed 514 runs evenly scored, and 13 wickets falling as regular as the rain throughout the afternoon.
Abridge won the match on the last ball of play: a dabbed hustled single as the ball did not leave the wicket to tie the their score on 257. It was as anti-climactic a finish as the ferocity of the cricket which preceded in the 4.5 hours earlier. The full lexicon of cricket shots was on display from the wristful artful A+S Kalyankar brothers [87 and 91 respectively] for LHCC ; and the clouting Wood 78,crouching Hartingden 69 and assured Cross 44 for Abridge, and 2 great catches for Sudip.
LHCC batted first being inserted in relative gloaming damp and wet. Fielding later in the rain proved tricky for LHCC with 5 catches ricocheting out of wet hands and 3 certain run-outs falling victim to the old bar of soap trick. Astwood was the pick of the LHCC bowlers although unrewarded in the shortened 30 over format going for just 36 in his 7 over spell. Malik by contrast went for 28 in his and LHCC opening over, though returned 3 for 62 in his 6 over allotment.
However no player should forget this day , and should reflect on the cricket spirit expressed by Abridge and LHCC in making it happen. For Little Hallingbury the feeling of bemusement will pass....to have tried so hard but lost by an invisible margin...instead we can remember the shared experience of being part of a quite literally incredible cricket match this day.
