Little Hallingbury Cricket Club Saturday Team v South Loughton CC on Sat 29 Apr 2017 at 1 pm
Little Hallingbury Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets
Match report
Berries' Saturday side started the season with a friendly against South Loughton 1s from Division 2 of the Herts and Essex Cricket League. With the opposition 2 short and Hallingbury with a surfeit of players, Richard Astwood and Will Goold guested for the visitors. Stewart Goold had a new opening partner in the shape of Amit Kalyankar after the departure of Alex Turner to some backwater called London. Stewart was just getting into his stride as the trademark lofted off-drive came out before April was over and the ball disappeared smartly to the boundary. Unfortunately the next ball saw him snick one to the 'keeper and he walked on 35 with the score on 82-1.
Sudip (6) joined his brother at the crease for brief spell. Smith, who had been unfortunate to see several edges speed through the vacant second slip position earlier on in the innings, picked up his second wicket as Scherer took another catch behind the stumps. Fensom fell first ball to Smith (3-56) as he was undone by some late movement which enabled the ball to evade the bat and hit the off stump. Luke has kindly offered to give him to pointers to improve his technique.
With the score on Nelson, the returning Dave Wain was bowled by our very own Richard Astwood (2-70) who followed it up by repeating the feat 4 runs later as Tom Phipps was unable to keep out yet another Astwood in-swinger. It was at this point Stuart Dobson (45*) came to the crease and along with Amit he steadied the ship. Both hits a series of forceful shots, but it was Amit who took a liking to the bowling in the latter part of the innings hitting 17 fours and 6 sixes, including one that he cut over backward point towards the gate, to carry his bat and finish on 141 not out. Berries closed their innings on 264-5.
Sly and L Hill opened the innings for South Loughton, and whilst both looked comfortable enough against a consistent Rumble, they found it tougher going against Fensom (1-43) from the Pavilion End. Sly, in particular, found it difficult to cope with the seam movement Jay generated playing and missing on a variety of occasions. It was the left-handed Hill (28) who ran out of luck though, as he edged the ball to the left of Stewart at first slip who managed to parry the ball up for the agile Tom Phipps to take the rebound.
Farthing joined Sly with the score on 71-1 and both players looked comfortable enough, with both players hitting some elegant strokes. The economical Stuart Dobson (1-28) dismissed Farthing for 25 as he clipped a ball of his legs and was dismayed to see that yours truly had managed to anticipate something for a change and was caught behind. Sly was dropped a couple of times on his way to making a fine century and was finally dismissed as he tried to cut a ball from the returning Dave Wain (1-42) that was not quite wide enough. The faint bottom edge was taken by the 'keeper and Sly sportingly walked on 123.
With required run rate of around 5 an over Scherer (53*) and Baker (10*) steered South Loughton home with 4 overs to spare for a deserved victory in an enjoyable game.
