Little Hallingbury Cricket Club Sunday Team v Stocking Pelham on Sun 02 Sep 2018 at 1.30pm

Match report
Sunday 2nd September 2018 will go down as a great day for Little Hallingbury Cricket Club. We saw the return of the prodigal (Alex White), the resurrection of Keith (playing his first game in his seventies) and the crowning of Nick Thorne.
Nick played his formative cricket at Sawbridgeworth Cricket Club. He was a promising player in his early teens but, as is often the case, interests elsewhere meant he drifted away from the game. In his late 20s he became a social member of Little Hallingbury Cricket Club with a heavy emphasis on the social. He toured Hampshire with us, played a few friendly fixtures and bowled what used to be known as Chinamen.
Over 10 years ago now he decided to focus on the playing, more specifically, coaching side of the game. He took his level 1 and 2 badges and started to help with our juniors. He volunteered to run the Sunday team which meant giving those juniors valuable playing experience. While Nick was one of the better batsmen and bowlers in the side, he always made sure others enjoyed as full a game as possible. As such, Nick would only bat or bowl if the playing conditions dictated it necessary. Sometimes his only involvement would be to captain the side and make sure the afternoon ran smoothly.
Despite this, Nick's game has improved significantly in recent years. Last year there were some scores in the 80s and 90s, this year he has had a run of half centuries. However he always thought that the chance of a hundred had gone. Batting in the mid to lower order, there was rarely enough time to build a lengthy innings and besides, other things were more important.
This Sunday, without any regular Sunday openers, Nick opened the innings with Amit Singh. Stocking Pelham had a decent bowling attack, Wayne Ives and Paul White have taken many wickets against us in the past. However another fine wicket from Gareth meant the openers could play their shots and the scoreboard moved along nicely. Amit fell in his twenties caught in the outfield which brought Karim to the wicket. Karim rolled back the years and hit some mighty sixes. Soon he was close to Nick's score, however he perished on the stroke of 50.
With under twenty minutes of the innings left, Nick was on 70 and it looked like his chance had gone. That did not matter, Raj was going nicely at the other end and the team was in a strong position.
Then there was a good over with 3 boundaries and Nick moved in to the eighties. Despite all the fielders being on the fence, Nick continued to hit strongly through mid wicket. With 5 minutes left on the clock, Nick drove a boundary and reached his first ever hundred. As he walked off, he apologised to the opposition skipper for not declaring sooner 'but these chances don't come along too often' he said. Too bloody right they don't.
While Stocking Palham made a strong fist of the run chase, it was fitting that several of Nick and Keith's proteges ensured we secured a winning draw. Alex White took a fine catch in the outfield, Samson bowled accurately and with a great deal of discipline. Economical opening spells from Will and Nabeel meant that we could attack towards the end of the innings.
As the sun set, we shared a drink with the opposition, many of whom have become good friends over the years. Nick bought a jug to celebrate his fine achievement. I can testify that rarely has a beer tasted better.
Well played Nick, a terrific innings from a great club man.
