Stansted Hall/Elsenham v Little Hallingbury Cricket Club Saturday Team on Sat 28 Jul 2018 at 1.30pm
Little Hallingbury Cricket Club Won By 5 wickets
Match report
LHCC travelled north to Stansted Hall on a cooler blustery afternoon than of late. Arriving mainly on time they found a flat well-prepared wicket, still absorbing the torrential thunderstorms from Friday morning and some overnight rain. Fortunately, the visitors won the toss, and inserted. However, the home openers Talbot [34] and McGurth [46] raced off to an impressive start reaching 89 in only 11, with Hallingbury helping them by spilling some crisply lofted drives in the covers and deep. Overall the glove work was neat, and ground fielding sharp early on with Renals harvesting everything in front of him.
Fenson [9-1-45] struck first with Sudip this time holding on. Astwood [9-0-63] had less fortune, but the ever welcome Rumble [9-1-45] picked up the other opener, well caught by Fensom at extra cover. Aided by the mean accuracy of Ishfaq [9-0-48] and the mercurial guile of Sudip [9-1-61] the run rate was kept to only 5 an over for the majority of the home innings after the early onslaught. Nasir [89 no] and Merrick [56], rotated well but never over dominated with the bat, although both were quick to punish short bowling and were strong off the back foot and off their legs respectively. The home side score accelerated in the last 8 overs, with plenty of batting line up to come , Merrick holed out to Singh off Sudip, and Zamir added a useful 29 no. The extras leakage of just 23 extras on a big fast outfield was testament to defensive field placements and an improved LHCC effort from previous weeks for the 45 overs. Ending on just 273, at 6 an over on such a good-looking wicket where there were only 3 casualties, the prospect of a win was as enticing as the well laid out tea, despite the use of paper plates.
Hallingbury started rapidly with multiple big and small boundaries to most corners of the ground. The 2 Amits determined to laydown a strong foundation and take full advantage of such a true surface. The 100 was up in only 12 overs without loss, before Amit Kalyankar [43] with 8 4s and an injured left foot was bowled Nazir, Wain [56] enjoyed a good start to maintain momentum and employed much experience to find runs from the 2 spinners who now posed a greater threat than the seam attack. Amit Singh [78] including 4 6s and 10 4s, could not find a way to play with the spin and perished to a retreating slip at 168-2 in 23 overs. Ishfaq [1] walked across early on to be Lbw, and at 175-3 at 24, Stansted scented a shift in momentum. Phipps [30 no] survived early on aided by a dropped easy chance and was able to farm runs easily down to point and third man, employing judicous use of drives over the top to find runs, and rotating well with Wain . The score did not dip much below 6 an over after the strong start, aided by multiple spilled chances in the field, and no third man contributing to the impressive 33 barrage of extras ceded by Stansted overall. Wain fell to a good Talbot Yorker just finding leg stump. A typical cameo from Rumble [12] returning from a mid-season sabbatical, kept the score accelerating, and brought in Fensom [23no] at 7 with exactly 40 required in 9 overs. With the majestic Fensom soon finding his stride against the medium pacers with the spinners bowled out, some imperious cover and extra cover drives with a borrowed bat exuded real class. Hallingbury were now accelerating to the finish line with Sudip waiting in the wings at 8, a fitting cover boundary splitting the field completed the innings of 276-5 off 41.3 overs.
