Great Hyde Hall v Little Hallingbury Cricket Club Sunday Team on Sun 07 Jul 2019 at 14.00
Little Hallingbury Cricket Club Lost By 71 Runs
Match report
A humid July afternoon saw us travel just up the road to Great Hyde Hall. This is a VERY friendly game with each innings being comprised of 30 overs. Every player in the team (even the wicketkeeper!) has to bowl 2 overs, after which there is a maximum of 4 overs per bowler. Each batsman must retire at 25, but can then return to the crease if the remaining batsmen are all out, and the first ball is a free hit!
After an uncontested toss Hallingbury were bowling first. Conditions at the little ground were ideal for batting and the Hyde Hall top order immediately cashed in, taking Nabeel's first over for 13. This would set the trend for much of the Hyde Hall innings as their top 4 batsmen all reached 25 and retired. After witnessing Martin trip over himself when he was bowling, Luke Stedman came back on for the end of his spell, and produced a fast in-swinging yorker to finally get the first wicket of the afternoon. What followed was a hostile wicket-maiden from the young quick (which even included a free hit!). At the other end, Thorne then had a wicket of his own after he bowled Hibbs for just 3. There was some excellent bowling at the back end of the innings, especially from Malcolm (0-17) and from Maria Stedman (0-18), who bowled a fantastic final over which only went for 3. Particularly impressive given that this was the first time she had bowled in a senior game.
The usual superb Hyde Hall tea followed, and with a target of almost 200 we couldn't afford to hang around. Karim and Sam got us off to a quick start, with both looking to play their shots before Karim was out for a bright and breezy 14. This brought Nick to the crease, but unfortunately the skipper would perish for just 4, which resulted in the sight of Iain Gibson walking out to bat. He and Watt started building a partnership, both players finding the fence, with Watt even hitting a 6 before he was bowled for 19. Luke Stedman joined Gibson in the middle, and the pair began trying to attack, with Luke mistiming a shot back to the bowler. At the other end, Gibson (27*) was winding back the clock, finding the boundary multiple times, and showing the youngsters how it's done! Malcolm had hit a boundary at the other end before he was out for 5. Martin and Toby would depart in quick succession, the latter being rather carelessly run out, and when Maria was out for 3 Gibson had to go back to the crease. Soon after Nabeel was adjudged lbw for just 6 and the game was over.
Despite the loss this was an enjoyable afternoon with a game played in great spirit!
