Hatfield Heath v Little Hallingbury Cricket Club Saturday Team on Sat 25 May 2019 at 1.30pm
Little Hallingbury Cricket Club Won By 9 Wickets
Match report
A curate’s egg of a performance from Hallingbury this weekend. Some poor fielding and indifferent bowling were superseded by a record-breaking partnership between Tom & Amit.
We lost the toss and were put in to bat on the first Saturday this season that had not threatened rain. An early start and bank holiday traffic meant that several players took to the field just as the game was starting and we spent the first half hour looking as though our minds were elsewhere.
Stu bowled a tidy first over and then with his first ball of the season, Jay had Wearden dropped in the gully. He went on to make 128 not out.
We continued in a similar vein, watching balls go under bodies, over outstretched feet and more catches going down. Some relief came when Jay bowled the dangerous R George for a belligerent 24.
Gradually we pulled ourselves together and started a period of containment. Ish bowled superbly and conceded only 25 runs in his 9 over spell. Both Will and Nabeel bowled important middle innings spells and were unlucky not to take wickets. At the half-way point, both sides would have been happy. The Heath had only lost one wicket but were struggling to get the rate above 5 an over.
There was a small acceleration in the last 5 overs and Will took a neat catch off Stu Dobson to see the Hatfield Heath innings close on 252-2. At tea, Ish felt they were 40 runs short, Tom said the uneven bounce meant it would be a difficult chase and he wasn’t looking forward to batting.
The first 8 overs of our reply were a tense affair. Amit Kalyanker was a picture of concentration. He re-fastened his gloves more times than he played any attacking shots. Amit Singh tried to take the attack to the opposition but perished trying to drive a ball that was not full enough. Briscoe had taken 1-13 off 5 overs when Tom came to the crease. He proceeded to hit him for 4 boundaries in an over and suddenly our innings was up and running.
With Tom making the early pace, Amit was able to build slowly, but once he was in to his 20s, his scoring rate increased. Both batsmen reached 50 at a similar time, carefully managing the rate and maintain a healthy 5 runs per over. Amit then started to accelerate and hit a glorious straight 6. The openers came back to try and create a breakthrough, but Tom and Amit stood firm. Amit reached his hundred with another straight 6 and started taking singles on the 5th ball of the over. With 10 overs to go, the game was up, allowing both batsmen to hit freely. We cruised home with 5 overs to spare and a valuable victory against our local rivals.
Tom and Amit put on 242 for the second wicket, breaking a 20-year record help by Keith Behagg and Nick Doyle. Having watched as catches were dropped off his bowling, Jay sat with his pads on for 35 overs but was not needed to bat. He says he will let us know when he is next available.
