Stansted v Little Hallingbury Cricket Club Saturday Team on Sat 06 Jul 2019 at 1.30pm
Little Hallingbury Cricket Club Lost By 6 Wickets
Match report
It was a week of nearlies for the Saturday team. We nearly ended up with 8 players, we nearly saw Ivan Shepherd come out of league retirement, we nearly collapsed to a pre-tea defeat, we nearly won and we nearly saw Neil play his first game since the 4th August 2007. I'm sorry that last one was a Maley not a nearly. Neil donned the whites to start his first game for the club since Gordon Brown had been PM for 5 weeks and Timbaland had knocked Rihanna off of the top of the charts with his hit "The Way I Are" featuring Kerri Hilson. Phil assures me that this track is an electro/hip hop fusion which was heavily influenced by R&B and Dance. Phil went on to say that it really wasn't a patch on Rihanna's Umbrella, which is according to the congnescenti is "absolute bangers".
Anyway, after winning the toss and learning that we were to be seranaded by Bentfield Primary School's Music in the Park throughout the match, we lost three early wickets which left us at 29-3. A mini stand between Sudip and Ishfaq threatened a revival, but just as he was starting to time the ball nicely Ish was trapped LBW by Baker and we were on 68-4 and staring down the barrel of an early finish. This brought Sudip and Dobbie together at the crease. They saw off the remaining overs of opening Stansted attack of Baker (1-24) and Abbotson (3-52) and then set about plundering the remaining bowling. Whilst the first 15 overs undoubtedly belonged to Stansted, second 15 belonged to Stuart and Sudip who added another 96 runs without loss in that time. It was only a misjudgement by Stuart just after the century partnership was reached as he shouldered arms and was bowled for 35 that undid their good work. Sudip departed in 34th over for a marvellous 77 including 13 fours and 1 six and an array of shots which explain why he is such an important player in the engine room of the side. This brought Phil "Pappa's got a brand new bag" Rowley to the crease to put on an unbroken stand for the 7th wicket of 73 and kindly nurse me to my first 50 of the season.
Having felt like we had got out of jail a bit at tea, we were brought back down to earth with a bump as Stansted's opener, Danny Elliott, carried out some plundering of his own which saw Stansted to 82 in the first 8 overs. Although Richard was unlucky that when he did find the opening batsman's edge, it sailed through the vacant fist slip area. Ishfaq, Amit K and Sudip (2-43) stemmed the tide with some tight bowling combined with some excellent fielding by Luke, Rich, Amit S and Tom. Dobbie (2-53) then bowled Baker for 27 with the first ball of his second spell and when Sudip floated a delivery with some width past the advancing Elliott (104), it left me with the simplest of stumpings and Stansted with a growing run rate to chase. With the overs ticking down they needed just over 8 an over and an unlikely Hallingbury victory appeared tantalisingly close. Alas, despite the wickets of Elliott and Sammons (65), who was excellent caught on the boundary by Amit K, some wayward bowling allowed Stansted to wrestle back control of the game and when Burgoigne was dropped on the boundary by someone who I will not name, so let's call him Lord Baelish, the game was almost up.
It was an enjoyable game overall, played in an excellent spirit, which I for one did not expect to last 88 overs at times during the afternoon. With 4 defeats on the spin we look to get back to winning ways at home to Thaxted next week. I am signing off to listen to Phil's recommendations of BCUC and Fontaines D.C. His tastes may be eclectic, but you ignore his suggestions at your peril. Have a good week everyone.
