Match report Another tough day at the office in the searing heat at Gaston Green. This will be remembered as the weekend Ben Stokes played the innings of his life - how we could have done with that on Saturday.
Sudip won a good toss and elected to bat on a wicket that looked and played like a road. Farnham used the conditions well, pitching the ball up and allowing the swing to challenge our batsmen. Gareth hit some lovely drives, but unfortunately Phil perished early. Ish hit a six then departed trying the same and Sudip was struck in front of the crease by the canny Stigwood.
Nick and Oli Latham then went some way to repairing the damage, playing the ball nicely along the ground and building a substantial partnership. When Nick departed, Stewart continued building the innings, however, Oli was the star, driving forcefully and running hard between he wickets. Not a lot of wag in the tail, another 6 from Stu Dobson and some scrambling from Tom and Will saw us to a below par 176.
In reply, the Farnham openers batted sensibly and gradually ground down the Hallingbury attack. Ish was his usual tidy self and Will snagged a couple of wickets. Freddie Dutton bowled beautifully for no return, but we were unable to apply any real pressure.
Next week, we are away to North Weald for the final league game of the season. Both clubs are battling relegation, so it should be a good contest.
