Match report A first win of the Saturday season for Hallingbury this weekend as we managed to snatch a win from the jaws of defeat.
With 2 players needing to leave early, we were keen to field first to ensure we had our full complement in the field. Unfortunately, Thaxted invited us to bat and we therefore set about trying to post a total that we could defend with depleted resources. We lost Luke Ranns early, but Amit and Oli took the attack to Thaxted putting on a 100-run partnership at good speed. Amit was back to his best with several towering sixes. A couple of quick wickets at the halfway point pegged us back and when Amit fell for 87, the innings started to falter. But once again Tom Heighes came to the crease and injected some aggression back into our batting. He put on 50 with Will and another 35 with Sudip before closing not out on 68.
241 looked competitive, but such is the quality of our wicket now, it is hard to feel safe with under 300. Tom and Stu bowled tidily with no luck – the former beating the bat twice an over. It wasn’t until Samson came on that we took our first wicket – a smart catch from Sudip. Next ball saw an LBW appeal upheld and Samson was on a hattrick. Thaxted survived and gradually started to rebuild. Wood struck a quick 30, but then fell LBW to Will as it looked as though he was taking the game away from us. Thaxted’s middle order accumulated steadily, but the rate was slowly creeping up. That all changed when we lost Amit and Oli and suddenly found ourselves with big gaps in the field. Stu marshalled the team superbly and his bowlers responded magnificently. Samson’s two final overs changed the game as he clean bowled Platt and then held on a fabulous return catch to dismiss Yeldham. With 2 new batsmen at the crease, Sudip held his nerve in the final over with Thaxted needing 19 to win. 7 runs and a wicket to Sudip saw us wrap up the match.
We celebrated with a beer afterwards with a big smile on our faces.
