Thorley CC 1st XI v Little Hallingbury Cricket Club Saturday Team on Sat 11 Jul 2026 at 13:00
Little Hallingbury Cricket Club Won By 62 Runs
Match report
The journey for LHCC took them across the River Stort, like crossing the Styx this happy band of men arrived in a place like Tartarus, which was Thorley - aka the home of the Gannets. A hostile unforgiving land ravaged by the climate with a rudimentary toilet block and yet unfinished pavilion , awaited them. Following the exceptionally close home fixture at the verdant Gaston Green in June when the tail of the Gannets wagged indecisively to fall just 3 runs short. This return fixture was framed with classic revenge surely a motivating factor for the home side.
LHCC innings started inauspiciously and lost wickets at 40,65,134,212 and 239 to accumulate 262 -5 . Healthy contributions from Joe Ash 62, Paritosh [C] 77 , a belligerent 16 from Hardik, and an assured perfectly timed accelerating innings of 58 from Vimal. The Thorley bowling was accurate with just 4 wides, some sharp fielding and 2 lbws awarded against LHCC.
The 262 was a defendable total even on the fast outfield with at least 8 bowlers in the LHCC arsenal. However the Captain's plans were shredded in the third over when Paritosh as keeper was hit down leg by the ball on the bridge of his nose, leaving the field . Added to this was Thorley's sense of outrage and injustice which inspired their early shots with extra power to the boundaries . 17 was scored of the first over, despite Aarush's [ 6-1-36 ] accuracy and early dismissal of an opener for 0. Thorley were making seemingly light work of the run chase. LHCC had to respond: The gloves were handed to Matt Shepherd who kept brilliantly with 2 catches and 1 bye, and the reigns of captaincy passed to Sudip. He first steadied the vessel buffeted by Thorley's raging torment . Then calm and discipline was instilled within the LHCC crew , as he plotted a course that would aim to secure victory. Slowly, despite the 19 wides gleefully award against LHCC, the run rate was arrested by a combination of Vimal and Hardik's sharp bowling complemented by an improving commitment in LHCC fielding which culminated in 5 catches from Matt [2] , Joe, Sudip and Phil . Hope was transformed into control under Sudip's skillful leadership , and boosted as the erstwhile spectating Tom B-C sped home like Pegasus to don his kit and to put his body on the line in field for the last 22 overs . The wickedly abstemious bowling of Ishfaq [ 4 -1-24 ] , and Veer [ 6-4-24 ] who teased and provoked Thorley into mighty blows that mixed lofty boundaries and wickets in succession , but ultimately ended in LHCC favour.
This was an epic victory for LHCC . Blood was spilt , sweat was expended but there were no tears for LHCC . They were forced to dig deep , with their backs against the builders' fence the Cricket gods decided the fate of this contest . A sense of outrage and perceived victimhood will by its nature only become self defeating. A more certain course is to trust in cricket skills , the resolve of your team-mates, and the leadership of your captain. So at 7.15pm blinking into the hot sun, LHCC secured victory by 62 runs to arrive in the victorious fields of Elysium.
