Great Hyde Hall v Little Hallingbury Cricket Club Sunday Team on Sun 04 Jul 2021 at 14.00hrs
Match was Tied
Match report
Sunday saw us face Hyde Hall in our annual 30 over fixture, where you retire at 25 with option to come back and all 11 (12 for the oppo this year) players have to bowl a minimum of 2 overs. We went out to bat first and our openers had a good partnership going, until the skip was run out despite a rather exquisite dive. Joe and Luke combined to further up the run rate, with youngest Wharton reaching his 25 and retiring. The middle order also made notable contributions with 20 a piece for Ash and Panton (who in his typical style cleared the ropes twice), before the tail came in and fell quickly in search of quick runs. Raj would eventually also reach his 25 and retire, leaving Luke W to face the final ball of the innings, leaving Hallingbury with a competitive 154 at half way.
As we came out to the field we saw a Stedman-Stedman opening pairing which started well, Maria getting the key wicket of Latham in just the 3rd over thanks to a brilliant low catch from Luke W. Then it was Andy's turn to strike, removing the Hyde Hall number 3 thanks to slick stumping by elder Stedman. Apperley and the skipper would then come into the attack, with Joe Ash taking a smart catch to give Apperley a wicket before Tom took 2 wickets himself- the Broad Oak Murali bamboozling the middle order. By this stage Martin had been thrown the ball and the spell that would follow was massive in the context of the game. Ajith would take a catch in the deep to give Martin his first wicket of the afternoon, but the perennial wicketkeeper wasn't finished yet. He would take 3 more wickets in the next 2 overs to give himself an unlikely chance at a maiden 5 wicket haul with one ball of his spell left. Ultimately the appeal off said ball was turned down and Stedman Senior would finish with 4 wickets. After these scenes Luke S would also claim a wicket of his own- the 6th of the day for the Stedman clan, and at this point it was anybody's game to win. It all came down to the final over with Hyde Hall needing 8 to win. After some scrambling from the 12th Hyde Hall batsman, Hibbs (40*) returned to the crease with the home side needing 2 off the last ball for victory. Somehow they scrambled a single, ensuring neither side could be separated after 60 overs of cricket.
A low scoring thriller, resulting in a rare tie. Next week we go again against Takeley at home.
