29 Aug 2011 : 10 Men of Hallingbury Complete Great Escape
10 Men of Hallingbury Complete Great Escape

In the final league game of the season a 49 run win was enough to allow Little Hallingbury to climb out of the dropzone for the first time since week 3.  Having been a drift at the bottom just six games ago, 4 wins from 6 allowed The Berries to avoid relegation at Hockerill's expense, who's last game was abandoned.

The pick of the Hallingbury batting was Sunny Bharambe who rode his luck at times to hit 79.  Stewart Goold hit 31 and Tom Phipps and Chris Arrowsmith both scored 28.  A little tail wagging by Nick Budd, Rob Hore and Ed Sainsbury saw Hallingbury to 219 for 8.  The wickets were shared equally among Heath's bowlers, with captain Lugg bowling his 10 overs tightly for 36 runs.

Despite being a man short, Hallingbury's 10 men fielded well.  Waheed Iqbal 2-24 and James Budd 2-53 started brightly picking up 2 early wickets between them.

Falkingham (40) and Corbin (31) then formed a solid partnership threatening to overhaul Hallinbury's total.  Tight bowling by Nick Budd 1-29 applied good pressure on Chadwell Heath, forcing Falkingham to attempt an ill-judged quick single.  Gareth Williams and Nick Budd combined to affect an easy run out.

Lacking a recognised 5th bowler, Williams came on for his first spell for Hallingbury.  His first ball, a wide half-volley, was edged behind to the impressive Rob Hore to dismiss Corbin.  This all but ended Heath's resistance, especially when skipper Lugg was clean bowled by Williams attempting a late cut.

Williams ended with 3-6 from his 4.2 overs (to the surprise of everyone, not least himself) and Hallingbury were able to celebrate their 5th win of the season at the end of a good natured match.

15 Aug 2011 : Oli Turner hits 64 as Hallingbury win by 68 runs
Another Turner Up for the Books

After the recent successes of Alex Turner (30), it was brother Oli's chance to shine this week with a powerful 64 in Little Hallingbury's 68 run win over a weakened Hockerill IIs. Oli Turner hit 8 fours and 1 six in his innings before falling to an in-swinging yorker from George Powell (1-60), leaving Hallingbury on 182-6. A fifty run partnership for the 8th wicket between Williams (34) and Hore (18) saw Hallingbury to their highest total of the season 254-9. Merv Thompson finished with 3-32 and Daultry 3-50.

Despite restricting to Hockerill's batsmen to 3 runs an over, Hallingbury's fielding performance did not match the batting. 11 chances went begging, 7 or 8 of them easy, allowing Hockerill to make it to 186-9 after 45 overs in fading light. Shyam Bharadwaj finished with 3-50 with Iqbal, economical as ever, unlucky to finish with 0-15 from his 6 overs. Winder top scored for Hockerill with an aggressive 45 before Alex Turner took one of his two chatches off of Bharadwaj.

The victory sets up a tense final 2 games with Hallingbury now just 3 pts behind Hockerill in the fight to avoid relegation from division 4.

06 Aug 2011 : Sunny Delight as Bharambe 7-28 has Thaxted in a spin and Phipps hits 61

Little Hallingbury Cricket Club Saturday Team 200 for 9 beat Thaxted 170 for 10

Little Hallingbury managed their third league win of the season as they attempt to climb out of the relegation zone. After Oli Turner hitting 10 of the first over, Thaxted bowled tightly with the economical Haigh finishing with 2-22 off his 10 overs. Alex Turner again batted well for his 42 before falling to Wood and Dom Rae-Long continued his run of form with another 30. The day belonged to Tom Phipps who made a chanceless 50 before he was bowled by Yeldham A. for 61, with Hallingbury finishing on 200-9.

Both Alex Turner (1-20) and Nick Budd (2-41) picked up an early wicket each. Oli Turner catching Wood at slip off of Budd and Ed Sainsbury taking a tricky catch running around behind square off of Alex Turner when Gent was unable to control a pull shot. After that Matthews (44) and Yeldham (32) looked to be taking the game Thaxted's way as they took the score to 100-2 after 22 overs. Hallingbury dropped Yeldham twice before Sunny Bharambe bowled him with the first ball of his spell through the gate. It was Oli Turner's smart catch off of Bharambe when the dangerous Matthews pulled in the air behind square that turned the tide. In the end Bharambe's flight and turn proved too much for Thaxted's batsmen and it was fitting that he took the last wicket to win the game and finish with excellent figures of 7-28 off of his 10 overs.

As ever the key individual performances were backed up by a team performance which will ensure that relegation is not a foregone conclusion.

30 Jul 2011 : Rae-Long hits classy 50, but Berries still lose
Despite hitting 63 at number 7, Dom-Rae Long ended up on the losing side.  Alex Turner followed up last week's ton with 34 and Stewart Goold rolled back the years with 43 before being adjudged LBW.....again.

The scoreboard after 8 overs of the White Roding innings read 8 for 2.... They never recovered form this and were shot out for 99

12 May 2011 : Little Hallingbury mourns the loss of Graham Freeman
Graham Freeman - A Tribute

It is with great sadness that we learnt today that Graham Freeman has finally lost his battle with cancer.

Graham played for Little Hallingbury for many years and was the model of consistency in his bowling.  Not only was he capable of tying up an end, but his skipper could rely on him to attack and pick up wickets at important stages in the match.  This fact is reinforced by Graham twice being the club's leading wicket taker in 2000 and 1997.  He was also the club member of the year in 1997.

I only had the chance to play alongside Graham for a couple of seasons before illness forced him from the field.  In that time it was clear that he was a determined cricketer and a true club man.  I often saw him bowl balls that were wasted on batsmen in Division 4, without reward.

Graham's last came for Hallingbury came on August 18th 2007 against Farnham IIs.  He took 4 for 20 from his 10 overs, helping to restrict Farnham to 146 all out.  We won the game by 7 wickets and secured our place in Division 4 because of it.

Graham was a model club cricketer with an approach to the game that many a young player could learn from.  Little Hallingbury is poorer for his passing and our heart-felt condolences go out to his family and friends.

Thank you for the memories Freemo and rest in peace.

Gareth
